A coalition of right-wing political organizations gathered at the University of Virginia on August 11 and 12, 2017 to protest removing the names of Confederate leaders from public spaces in Charlottesville. The organizers intended to show the strength of white nationalists and to distinguish themselves from Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. However, violence quickly broke out, initiated by the white nationalists, and their Nazi chants belied their claims. A protestor was killed by a driver who was part of the march.
