Student body President Trish Palermo called for removing President Lotus Coffman’s name from Coffman Union shortly after the exhibition A Campus Divided opened in Andersen Library. She noted that the union housed the offices of all of the cultural associations on campus and opposed retaining the name of a past president who was committed to segregation on campus. University president Eric Kaler suggested that President Coffman’s full record would be assessed. Palermo’s statement constituted an early step in the movement to call for renaming buildings.
