In January 1937, the Minneapolis chapter of the American Legion sent a resolution to the University committee of the Minnesota State House of Representatives demanding the ouster of Dean of Students Edward E. Nicholson. Citing Nicholson’s activities as a member of the Grand Jury Foreman’s association and the Law and Order League, the Legion described Nicholson as being “a man unfit to keep the respect of the students at the University of Minnesota.” The Law and Order League was formed in response to active labor union organizing and strikes in Minnesota and was an arm of the Citizen’s Alliance, an association of owners of major industries, whose purpose was to stop workers’ rights to organize unions.
